Welcome to the BMAA Microlight and Paramotor records site.

Could you fly around a 100 Km triangle at an average speed of 131 Km/h in a trike, or a 50 Km triangle at 66 Km/h in a paramotor?

If you can then you could claim not just a UK record but a World record as well, but you MUST prepare for it in advance, it is impossible to claim any record retrospectively because it is almost certain you won't have collected the right proofs.

Everything you need is on this site. Read How to do records first.

[24 November 2018] Changes to the definition of a microlight made at the CIMA plenary meeting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia effective from 1 Jan 2019.

After more than 25 years the inexorable pressure to increase the weight definitions of microlights again has come to pass. This has very significant implications in the types of aircraft in which you can fly in international championships and claim microlight & paramotor World records.

Summary (but please refer to the new definitive text in the 2019 edition of S10 chapter 1)

A one or two seat powered aircraft whose minimum speed at Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) is less than 83 km/h, and having a MTOW of:

  • 400 kg for a landplane flown solo
  • 500 kg for a landplane specifically designed to be flown with two persons but flown solo in championships.
  • 430 kg for an amphibian or a pure seaplane flown solo;
  • 550 kg for an amphibian or a pure seaplane specifically designed to be flown with two persons but flown solo in championships.
  • 600 kg for a landplane flown with two persons
  • 650 kg for an amphibian or a pure seaplane flown with two persons
  • 560 kg for an autogyro flown with two persons

These definitions also apply to foot-launched Microlight and Paramotor aircraft.

[14 November 2009] Changes to rules for records made at the CIMA plenary meeting in Lausanne, effective from 1 Jan 2010:

  • Change to the FAI Definition of a microlight or Paramotor: For the purposes of the FAI definition, emergency parachutes designed to bring the whole aircraft down used to be considered to weigh 'nothing'. Now, the weight is considered, but MAUW may be increased by 5% if such a device is fitted, so 300 Kg / 315 Kg for aircraft flown solo and 450 Kg / 472.5 Kg for aircraft flown with two persons. (Of course this does not supercede any National or Airworthiness requirement).
  • Microlight Autogyros: Autogyros falling into the FAI MAUW and minimum speed definitions of a microlight will be able to compete in FAI microlight championships and claim FAI microlight records. Note. Although this was agreed unanimously by CIMA, there are technical issues relating to global FAI rules which must be fixed before this can be implemented so this will not come about on 1 Jan 2010 as normal, but some time after that.
  • Photographic evidence It will no longer be possible to make a record claim using the 'classical' method of photographic + barograph evidence. From now on GPS + (in most cases) barograph evidence will always be required.
  • Championship records The rules have been adjusted to potentially make these records available in more championship tasks.
  • Proof of minimum speed It is now assumed all Foot launched microlights and all Paramotors (including PL1's & PL2's) are capable of a minimum speed of less than 65 Km/h. In these classes it is therefore no longer necessary to provide a Proof of minimum speed in record claims.
  • Naming of Aircraft in records Following some dissatisfaction as to how FAI have been naming aircraft in record claims, particularly in the case of paramotors, but also in some trikes, a naming protocol has been agreed with FAI designed to solve this and the FAI record claim forms will be amended in due course.

The Diploma may be awarded each year to the pilot or crew of a Microlight who made the most meritorious flight which resulted in a Microlight World record claim ratified in the calendar year preceding the CIMA meeting. The commission decided that the Altitude record set by Mark Jackson and Eve Jackson to 7395m (24258 Ft) over Kilimanjaro was the best effort of the year and the diplomas will be awarded at the next FAI general conference which is at Incheon, Korea, 6 - 11 Oct 2009.

[14 November 2008] Electric powered classes and Female Paramotor class introduced
At the CIMA plenary meeting in Lausanne, the commission voted to introduce separate classes for Electrically powered microlights and paramotors, thus opening the way for their own UK and Worlds records. It also took the historic step to divide the PF1 (foot launched Paramotor) class into male and female classes, thus opening the way for separate UK and World records by female paramotor pilots. These rules will be included in the 2009 edition of FAI Section 10 which becomes valid from 1 Jan 2009.

[20 October 2008] Microlight instructors are automatically Official Observers

[1 January 2008] 2008 FAI Section 10 published. One significant change in that the co-pilot in record claims in aircraft flown with two people MUST now have a FAI sporting licence. Otherwise some small changes to the rules for records, mostly just clarifying the major changes made last year. 2008 is also the start of the transitionary period ending 1 Jan 2009 after which all FAI licences must be centrally registered with FAI by National Aero Clubs, in UK: RAeC. The major implication is that for microlight records and to be able to compete in championships, pilots must be certain that their sporting licence is indeed registered with FAI for the sport of microlighting.

[2 November 2007] Michel Carnet submits two more UK and World record claims in Paramotors. See UK record claims pending ratification.

[23 October 2007] Michel Carnet submits two UK and World record claims in Paramotors. See UK record claims pending ratification.

[16 October 2007] FAI announces at its general conference in Rhodes that as from 1 January 2008 FAI sporting licences will be maintained on a central database rather than by individual National Aero Clubs. Further news of how this will work will be announced in due course.

[1 January 2007] FAI publishes a new version of FAI Section 10 which has considerably simplified the business of making record claims. This includes the mandatory use of a Record Claim Form intended to assist record claimants to make complete claims.

[4 December 2006] New World record; FAI ratifies the claim by Richard Meredith-Hardy and David Hoyle for Speed over a closed circuit of 50Km in class RWL2 (2 seat Weightshift).

[11 November 2006] Extensive proposals to modernize and simplify the international rules for microlight and paramotor records accepted by the FAI Microlight commission and will come into effect on 1 Jan 2007.

[26 October 2006] The FAI Ann Welch Diploma introduced into FAI by-laws at the FAI General Conference. One Diploma may be awarded each year by the FAI Microlight and Paramotor Commission to the pilot or crew of a microlight or paramotor who made the most meritorious flight which resulted in a Microlight World record claim ratified in the previous calendar year.

[7 September 2006] Extensive proposals to modernize and simplify the international rules for microlight and Paramotor records published for consultation at www.flymicro.com/cima06

[23 August 2006] Dave Hairs makes a Distance with limited fuel World Championship record in class PF1 (paramotors) by flying 110.161 Km on two litres of fuel at the 2006 European Paramotor Championships, Chozas de Abajo, Len (Spain).

[21 August 2006] Richard Meredith-Hardy and David Hoyle claim a UK and possibly a World record for Speed over a closed circuit of 50Km in class RWL2 of 146 Km/h at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA in a P&M Aviation Quik GT450. This claim is currently being evaluated.

[24 April 2005] Stuart Bond claims UK and possibly World records in class RWF1 for altitude; 12,158 ft [3706m] and time to climb to 3000m [9842 ft] in 0:52:50 from Brooklands Farm, Alconbury in a Doodlebug. August 2005 update: Information sufficient to ratify this claim was never received by BMAA and the claim is now void.

[19 May 2004] Storm Smith and Miles Hilton-Barber claim a new UK RAL2 class (Weightshift microlight flown dual) altitude record of 20,300 ft (6187 M) in a Pegasus Quik with a Rotax 912S engine from Eshott in Northumberland. May 2005 update: Information sufficient to ratify this claim was never received by BMAA and the claim is now void.

[17 November 2003] The CIMA meeting of 14 - 15 November 2003 resolved that as from 1 Jan 2004 the Payload provision 1.3.2 of the Microlight definition in FAI Section 10 is entirely deleted. Whether this is a wise decision only time will tell but it opens the door for record attempts in some aircraft which may previously have had difficulty complying with the FAI definition. Henceforth the only proof of weight required is that the MTOW is below 450 Kg for aircraft flown dual or below 300 Kg for aircraft flown solo.

[26 April 2003] Will Hughes and his daughter Ceri Hughes establish a new UK Altitude record in Class WL2 (Weightshift flown dual) of 3296m (10,817 ft) in a Pegasus Quantum 15-912 at Henlow, Beds. See WL2 records

[9 November 2002] New 'Annex 6 to Section 10, GNSS Flight Recorders' approved by CIMA. New document dealing with the use of GPS flight recorders in records and championships will become valid on 1 January 2003.
For more information see www.flymicro.com/fr.

[14 November 2001] The CIMA meeting of 26-27 October 2001 resolved to change the way in which distances are calculated to the WGS84 standard. This will come into effect on 1 Jan 2002 for both UK and World microlight record claims.

For many years FAI Section 10 has stated that distances of under 100Km should be measured off a map (of not less than 1:250,000 scale) and greater distances calculated as the length of the arc of the Great Circle where the Earth is considered to be a sphere of radius 6371 Km.

The new rule for records states: All distances shall be measured by determining the geodesic between each point based on the WGS84 ellipsoidal World model.

The WGS84 ellipsoid is very close to the real shape of the Earth wheras a sphere is only an approximation. There is the added advantage that distances can now be much more easily measured with GPS units which are all equipped with the WGS84 datum.

The WGS84 ellipsoid has an equatorial radius of 6378.1370 Km and a polar radius of 6356.7523 Km. It is centered on the Earth's centre and oriented on its spin axis. The shortest distance between two points on the surface of an ellipsoidal World model is known as a Geodesic. (A Geodesic is to an ellipsoid what a Great Circle is to a sphere.)
